
Opotiki is the northern gateway to Eastland and is also in the area known as "The Tourist Diamond of the Pacific." The coastline provides miles of safe swimming, fishing, boating, biking, loafing, or just walking, and there are numerous rivers for fishing, rafting, jet-boating or sailing - all on your doorstep.

White Island is also one of world's best scuba diving destinations, offering a unique dive experience exploring the underwater steam vents. For the more adventurous, jet boating trips are easily arranged on the Motu River providing access to remote New Zealand.
Also nearby are thermal areas with delightful hot pools, bush country wilderness, national parks and defined walks as well as one of New Zealand's best collections of native flora at Hukutaia Domain.
For those interested in golf the Opotiki Golf Club is home to a challenging par 70 course with great views of White Island and the surrounding countryside. Opotiki's Motu Challenge
The Motu challenge multi-sport gathering of athletes is a home grown event which has developed into the second largest of its kind in the country and which now attracts competitors from all over New Zealand as well as many international competitors. A grueling event held in and around Opotiki, the event has four stages; the first a 65km Mountain Bike, second a 17km Run, third a 52km Road Cycle and a final Multisport stage comprising a 27km Kayak, 8km Road Cycle and 3km Run to the finish. Fibre and Fleece Design Awards
The Fibre and Fleece Awards are held each year in Opotiki, drawing interest from the world outside the eastern Bay of Plenty. The awards aim to encourage craftspeople, designers and artists to create garments, furnishings and art forms using a wide variety of materials: yarns, fibre, leather, fur, flax, bone, stone, clay, glass, wood or any other medium that is naturally sourced.
